I am unsure how to describe this place. It is part hotel, part local gathering spot, part gym, part soccer field, part card room. We arrived at one in the morning to a courtyard that made little sense. A man came from behind some bushes and directed us toward what was called reception. He walked with us. He smelled and looked like he had no home. Inside, the reception room was pitch dark. When he opened the door, automatic lights revealed a man sitting quietly in the dark. They showed us to our room, but the first man demanded money. The start of our stay was strange. The next morning, children screamed outside. Looking out the window, the hotel sits next to a soccer field full of fifty children shouting. The compound itself is open. Locals move freely, which would be fine if the hallways were secure, but they were not. The female receptionist was helpful. She assisted with exchanging money. The cleaning staff was diligent, and the air conditioning worked well. Power went out frequently. A serious concern arose with a personal item. After a car ride back to the hotel, a small pill case fell from my purse inside the vehicle. I did not notice it was missing. Later, at the hotel restaurant, a waiter approached carrying the pill case and asked if it belonged to us. I thanked him repeatedly, and he left. Forty-five minutes later, he returned. He said the driver had required payment for returning it, claiming he had given the driver two thousand. The waiter demanded the same from us. He knew our room number and we were left with no choice but to pay. This was not requested on our part and felt more like a bribe than a service. It left a bad impression and raised questions about safety and hospitality. We had arranged a taxi through the hotel at seven in the morning. They required twenty-five thousand in advance, though the ride usually costs eighteen thousand. The driver arrived and spoke no English. He demanded additional payment, claiming tolls.
